The A-B-C-S Method of Organizing Your Photos

Organizing printed photos can feel overwhelming, but by using the A-B-C-S method, you can streamline the process and focus on what truly matters. Here’s how to tackle your collection efficiently:

A: The Best of the Best

These are your “A” photos—the highlights of your collection. They’re the ones that evoke the strongest emotions and memories. Ask yourself:

- Would I be devastated if this photo were lost?

- Does this photo tell an important part of my story?

- Is it album-worthy?

These photos should be digitized, backed up, and preserved in a special way. While not every "A" photo will end up in an album, they deserve extra attention.

What to Do with “A” Photos:

- Digitize and back them up

- Display or share them

- Place them in an “A” container for future projects

B: The Supporting Cast

Your “B” photos are still valuable but are more like supporting characters to your “A” photos. They provide context, show variation, and add depth to the moments captured.

What to Do with “B” Photos:

- Archive them for safekeeping

- Keep them for personal use, but don’t worry about displaying or digitizing every single one

- Place in a labeled “B” container

C: Can It… Go in the Trash?

Here comes the tough part—your “C” photos are the ones you can let go of. These might be duplicates, blurry shots, or random scenery that doesn’t hold significant value.

What to Do with “C” Photos:

- Be ruthless: aim to eliminate 80% of your photos

- Only keep two or three photos of repetitive scenery (e.g., sunsets, beaches)

- Discard generic photos that don’t tell a story

S: The Storytellers

Your “S” photos are the gems that tell a story. These images may seem ordinary but carry a deeper meaning for you. Take the time to jot down the memories or feelings associated with them.

What to Do with “S” Photos:

- Write the story on an index card or add it to a digital note

- Consider adding metadata (names, places, dates) for future reference

- Store them separately for future projects, such as albums or video montages

By following the A-B-C-S method, you'll end up with a beautifully curated collection that preserves your most cherished memories without the clutter. Happy organizing!
